What a great way to end the weekend with some festive fun mini sessions. Thank you, to all of you who bared the cold it was a little chillier then we had hoped for but all in all a great day. I have to give a big shout out to Emmy MacDonald who assisted me and was an incredible help she's not to use to Alberta winters but she stuck it out with me in the cold. Sneak peeks coming soon but here's a bit of us getting ready and goofing around.

Holidays & Updates - Stony Plain Photography

It has been so long since I blogged, thought a update was in order.

I recently had the chance to take a break and go on a much needed holiday with my other half. We went to Costa Rica for a second time and it was no disappointment, beautiful as ever. We got the chance to spend time with some family, my Father and his wonderful wife, and meet a lot of new people.  Now it is back into the full swing of things as spring quickly approaches. It is going to be an exciting spring with the months already filling up and so many new faces. I have a new floor for the studio arriving shortly and many new additions to come.  Getting supper excited for the green grass and beautiful weather but let's not forget how much fun we can have during this wet season, puddle picture's top my list for favorite photo's. I'm thinking a puddle day may be in order stay tuned for that.  Here are a couple pics from our holiday hope you enjoy.

Update/Moving

Hi

I hope everyone's summer was wonderful. I can't believe fall is fast approaching, along my drive this weekend I saw the leaves changing color, it is just crazy. With fall almost hear don't miss your chance for some beautiful family photo's there's noting more wonderful then the fall colors and the memories you can make playing in the leaves.  Also allowing you to revamp those Christmas cards with some fresh photo's.

"Don't forget there's a Fall Family Giveaway going on as well" check out the blog or join me on facbook for details

Many exciting things are happening this month. We are moving, still in Stony Plain so don't worry. In turn AJ Photography will be moving as well. I am supper excited as the studio will be a bit bigger and most of all more storage for props(essentially this means I can acquire more props lol) and will give me a chance to have a fresh new look for the studio. As such the studio is now closed until mid Oct. (boo) but I will be still doing outdoor shoots (hurray). Also this month I have the pleasure of being the photographer for the Spruce Grove / Stony Plain RCMP Community Regimental Ball, something that is personally important to me.

A side note to those who have been following the journey and triumph of my stepmother against Breast Cancer. She is officially done Chemo and is doing fantastic. Also my father shaved his head for cancer and in doing so raised $5500.00, just incredible. This journey has touched so many people in so many ways and has truly opened my heart and mind. Here is a couple pics from the event.

I send a thank you out to everyone for there support and for making this a fantastic summer I look forward to seeing many of you this fall.

Keep smiling

It is the Artist using the Tool

So many times I have had people come up to me and ask "what camera do you use" as if it's a defining moment or tell me "those photo's are beautiful helps to have a nice camera".  I always have to stop and laugh ,in my head of course, cause when it really comes down to it since when did the camera become the artist.

(Side note I do love these people because they make me think and have moments like this.)

I read a post on a blog today (Two Guy's That Shoot) that summed it up better then I ever could, the post was by Leah Millet.

" A camera is a tool. It does not have a vision and it cannot feel the emotions. It is merely a mechanism made of glass and metal… No matter how fabulous it claims to be, it cannot create an image with out your help.
I am positively fascinated by architecture. Never, when I have marveled at a structure, have I thought to myself, ‘I wonder what type of hammer they used’.  Maybe it’s because I’m not an architect. Maybe if I was I’d think to myself, ‘hmmm, I bet they used the Stanley 3000′? But honestly, I don’t think I would.  And yet as photographers, one of the very first questions we ask or hear is about our cameras. Why is that? Are we trying to say that it is the camera or the lens that produced and made an image what it is? Are we trying to imply that the image stands on the merits of the equipment rather then the artist?
Now before you start forming all kinds of opinions on me let me give a few ideas on why I think we do this. The first and most obvious is that of the budding photographer, when we are new there is a lot to figure out. The desire and need for learning seems endless, you may see an image and wonder how that was even possible (usually because of the constraints of your own equipment) so you want to know what was used. The other obvious is that when you really admire someone’s work you become curious about what tools they use to create that work. There are other reasons of course that may be legitimate, good old-fashioned curiosity probably being #1. But should it really be question number one? At every wedding I’ve shot there is always that token someone, the one who comes up and hovers for a few before they ask ’so what kind of camera is that?’ And then they want to talk about cameras and aperture and ISO, completely missing the fact that that camera they were curious about needs to be used to create a document of the moment’s that I, the artist am seeing.
The point I want to make is that the camera is not the artist. The camera does not create the composition, find just the right angle and pause 1/2 way down on the shutter breathlessly waiting for the expression that she knows is coming. The camera cannot.  After all, it is only a tool. It is the creator, the artist, and the soul behind the camera that creates the image and evokes the emotion.
When you feel yourself wondering what camera they use, wonder instead (first) about the elements that make the shot so intriguing to you. Recognize and appreciate that it’s not the camera that sees the art – it’s you. And that is a wonderful thing because you cannot be duplicated! You can hand over your camera to anyone else and they won’t see exactly what you see, nor capture exactly what you capture.
I love my camera.  Just as a painter needs his brushes, I need my camera! But my camera is not the only one to take credit in what is produced, I had a pretty big say in it too!" (Leah Millet)

Like I said couldn't have put it better myself.

As Time Passes

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend. My Family and I headed to Manitoba to see Friends. 11 hours each way but I got to photographer the cutest 2 year old ever and that made it so worth it. Seeing the friends was ok to lol.

Alot of you have been asking about my Step Mom and how she is doing. At this point she is doing good actually better then good, amazing, she has overcome so much and done it in such a way that only she could.  I unfortunately have not been able to really see her since treatment started but talk to her and my father regularly to find out how things are going. I will be seeing her soon as we are working on coveralls together for an upcoming themed wedding I'm doing in July.  I thank you for the continual support and concern it means so much to me.

Spring is here and summer is closely behind though with the weather it has not been the most enjoyable, it is still a great change from the snow and rain can make for fun pictures if you've got the right attitude.

June is going to be a crazy month full of fun and laughter, Amy and Devon's wedding is fast approaching, with an outdoor garden theme it is sure to be amazing. Ellie & Jim Schwabs Reception will soon follow after that, they are putting a lot of hard work into it doing everything themselves.  I will get to see so many new faces and returning ones this month and all while making new memories supper pumped.

Notes

It has been a great New Year for business and friendship so far, many returning faces and new ones as well. I have many new ideas this year and am thrilled to see them play out. I have just purchased a new lens so excited, thanks to all of you, without you, it wouldn't be possible. Jody shakes his head as I acted like a kid at Christmas with my new toy.  I will be heading to Dominican very shortly to shoot a wedding in April for a wonderful couple, Ellie and Jim, what can be more romantic then sun, sand and ocean and poor me stuck in paradise working (wink wink) actually have you ever tried to move quickly on sand it's hard work lol but I think I'll survive.

The Breast Cancer Photo Shoot weekend is fast approaching eekk, no really I'm supper stocked for this one.  The response has been incredible, just talking about some of the ideas and fun everyone is planning for there shoot has been entertaining, it will be a blast.  As many of you know this weekend has a personal note for me, the whole reality of it all and how it has effect my family has been life changing and eye opening.  The loved one that inspired me to do this, I was hoping to have in attendance, but feared she may not be up to it.  Instead she is doing amazing and with her high spirit, positive attitude and determination will be going to do some healing in Costa Rica before continuing on her journey through this process and there for will be unable to attend, can you blame her. It is with this in mind that I become even more excited about the shoots as I hope through this we can help and inspire others. My loved ones have said many Thanks You's for support during this time but really as I step back it is them I say thank you to for the inspiration, hope and refreshing outlook this all has given me.

Also I have had a few inquiries about just cash donations to Breast Cancer from those unable to make it and thing to help out with the weekend event, please just call me and we can discuss it further. 780-904-5244

I smile as I read over this and am now running off to play with my new toy, keep smiling!

The Leaves are quickly blowing away

This time a year is definitely one of my personal favorites, but how quickly it will pass. It has been a exciting start to fall so far and I look forward to taking in every moment we have left. If there is anyone still interested in doing family photo's in this beautiful backdrop I have opened up a couple more spots to get everyone in, but remember those blowing leaves don't last long.
